How to Choose Your Next Fantasy Book This Spring

woman reading

Spring always makes me want to start something new. There’s something about this season that feels like a perfect time for a reset.

And for me, that usually means adding more fantasy books to my TBR.

This morning, I sat down at our dining table with my journal and wrote for 15 minutes straight — something I hadn’t done in a while. It felt refreshing, and it reminded me how much I enjoy starting again, even in small ways.

And somehow, that feeling always spills into my reading life.

But here’s the thing, as much as I love discovering new books, choosing what to read next isn’t always easy.

Between upcoming fantasy releases, endless recommendations, and my ever-growing TBR, I often find myself overwhelmed with too many choices.

Especially as a mood reader.

Over time, I’ve learned to approach this a little differently. I try to be more intentional in a way that actually fits my life, not the other way around, otherwise, I’d never feel satisfied.

So in this guide, I’ll share a few simple ways that I personally do to help you choose your next fantasy read this spring, without overthinking it.

Why It Feels So Hard to Choose What to Read

Choosing what to read next should feel exciting, but sometimes, it just feels overwhelming.

There are so many options these days! From TikTok recommendations, never-ending book lists online, and blog roundups, it feels like there’s always another book you should be reading.

And with that comes pressure.

The pressure to pick the “right” book. You know, the most talked-about one! Or the one everyone seems to love. I used to fall into this a lot.

I’d try to keep up with what everyone else was reading so I could join the conversation. But more often than not, it just led me into a reading slump. I’d pick books that didn’t quite fit my mood, and instead of enjoying them, I’d struggle to get through them.

Now, I approach it a bit more differently.

I don’t try to find the best book anymore. I just pick what feels right for me in that moment.

And because of that, I read more consistently, enjoy the books I choose, and actually feel fulfilled when I finish them.

Start With Your Reading Mood (Not the Hype)

One of the simplest ways to choose your next read is to start with how you want the book to feel.

Not what’s trending or not what everyone’s talking about.

Just your mood.

If you want something magical and easy to get into

Sometimes, you just want a fantasy book that pulls you in without much effort, like something immersive, engaging, and easy to follow.

Perfect if you’re getting back into reading or just want something comforting this spring.

Try one of these:

  • Stay for a Spell  – a cozy, bookshop-set fantasy about a princess cursed to stay among the shelves until she discovers what she truly wants
  • The Tiny Magic Bookshop –  a magical small-town story about returning home and finding your place again
  • The Memory Bookshop –  a gentle, emotional fantasy exploring memory, grief, and second chances

These are the kinds of books that feel easy to step into, especially if you’re reading in your free time.

If you want something darker or more atmospheric

Some days, you might want something with a deeper, moodier tone, something that feels a little more intense or immersive.

These are great if you want to fully immerse yourself in a story.

Try:

  • Thistlemarsh – a haunting, atmospheric story set in a crumbling manor filled with secrets and fae magic
  • A Dark and Wild Wood – a darker fantasy with eerie undertones and a strong sense of place
  • The Sourdough Compendium – a collection of gothic, interconnected tales filled with magic, danger, and folklore

These are the books that create a strong mood –  the kind that stays with you even after you put them down.

If you want something character-driven

If you’re in the mood for something more personal, look for fantasy books that focus on characters and relationships.

These are the stories that pull you in emotionally.

Try:

  • Maiden – a powerful story following three women navigating sacrifice, power, and survival in a kingdom bound by tradition
  • The Witch and the Huntress – a myth-inspired story exploring identity, love, and choice in a world shaped by gods and expectations
  • The Girl with a Thousand Faces – a character-focused fantasy about identity, transformation, and self-discovery

If you want to feel connected to the story, this is where to start.

Don’t Try to Pick the “Perfect” Book

There’s no such thing as the perfect book.

A book that feels amazing one week might not work at all the next. And that doesn’t mean it’s a bad book, it just means it wasn’t the right time.

I’ve learned that the right book tends to find you when you need it.

So instead of trying to get it exactly right, just choose something that feels close enough.

Choose Just One (and Let That Be Enough)

It’s so easy to line up multiple books at once — especially when your TBR is full.

But instead of stacking five options, try choosing just one.

One book you feel curious about or matches your mood, and let that be enough for now.

You can always come back to the others later.

Let Your Reading Fit Your Life (Not the Other Way Around)

Reading doesn’t have to look a certain way. It doesn’t have to be hours at a time or perfectly consistent.

Sometimes it’s just a few pages before bed. Sometimes it’s a chapter here and there when you can.

And that still counts.

Your reading life should fit into your day, not the other way around.

Some Fantasy Books to Start With This Spring

If you’re still not sure where to begin, here are a few fantasy books this spring that are worth considering:

  • The Bone Door – a surreal, mysterious fantasy that blends reality with something more dreamlike
  • The Impossible Garden of Clara Thorne – a quest-driven story with magic, travel, and a touch of romance
  • Death Meets Cute – a fun, quirky fantasy about a witch struggling to be villainous
  • The Reimagining of Thornwood House – a cozy, character-driven story about a magical house and new beginnings

Bottomline

Choosing what to read next doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Sometimes you don’t need the perfect book, just one that meets you where you are.

And that’s more than enough.
